It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear father Haynes Albert Small. Born November 2nd 1931, in Debreuil, St Lucia, Haynes was a remarkable person who led a fulfilling life of service for God and dedication to his family.
Haynes shared his life and love with his devoted wife of 65 years, Ann Small. Their love story began on the island of Montserrat. While traveling to Puerto Rico for work with a building contractor, Haynes was aboard a vessel that sank off the coast of Montserrat. He, along with the other passengers, were able to swim to shore, where he met Ann Christopher, affectionately known as “Sarah”, while eating at her family's bed and breakfast. For Haynes, it was love at first sight.
Before leaving Montserrat, Haynes respectfully sought permission from Ann’s guardian to court her. Approval was granted following a trip to St. Lucia to “investigate” the Small family. Haynes and Ann corresponded through letters and eventually, Ann accepted his proposal of marriage. The couple were married on December 28th 1960.
In 1961, Haynes and Ann moved to the island of St. John, where he built a life and established himself as a mason/ builder, exterminator and beekeeper. His dedication to beekeeping earned him the affectionate nickname “The Bee Man” among members of the island community. Beyond his work, Haynes found great joy in fishing and gardening. He spent hours in his gardens sowing seeds and speaking to his plants, urging them to grow. You could say he was the plant whisperer, as his gardens always produced an abundance of fruits and vegetables.
Haynes will be lovingly remembered for his genuine kindness, his deep love for God and his family, and his care and compassion for others. His life was a testament to faith, hard work, devotion, and love—qualities that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Haynes was a cherished father to his children: David (Sylvina) Thomas, Kenneth Small, Keith (Esther) Small, Annette Small, Kelvin Small, Anita (Augustin “Jahi”) Smith, Angela (Drayton) Hanna; Grandchildren: Gary Thomas, Stephanie Thomas, Kenisha Small (Jermaine Carty), Kenneth Jr (Bertil) Small, Kevin Small, Brandon Small, Brianna Small, Kelvin Jr (Jakeema) Small, Khalil Small, J’Meeka Blake-Bryan, Brently Smith, Jakely Smith, Austin Smith, Abigail Smith, Nicholas Hanna, Isaac Hanna, Alayna Hanna; Great Grandchildren: Teshawn Hill, Cameron Hill, Rhea Hill, Kayden Small, Kyrie Small, Kaylon Small, Ah’miyah John, Jabari Wilson, Garan Thomas, Quentin Smith and Nora
